Assistance to Rural Schools

With funding from supporters, VNHELP launched a three-year pilot project (1992-1995) to support a Junior High School of 150 talented students in Can Loc District, Ha Tinh Province (an eight-hour ride from Ha Noi). VNHELP has provided funding for a small library at the school, text books, and school supplies for teachers and students, and granted scholarships to disadvantaged students.

In responding to the Parent Teacher Association's concerns for the children's education in the Dong Hoa Hiep Elementary School, Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province, VNHELP's assistance of $1,000 in 1994-1995 helped improve school facilities and furnish educational materials for teachers and 420 students. This project was initiated by VNHELP supporters residing in California who came from the village.
"VNHELP's contributions were used to rebulid the school facilities with a new coat of paint, new windows, new blackboards, and the text books are very valuable to our teachers and students."
Ha Van Tan, PTA president of Dong Hoa Hiep Elementary School, March 1994.

In 1996, VNHELP provided the Tan Phu Elementary School in Son Dinh Village, Cho Lach District, Ben Tre Province with monetary assistance to rehabilitate its dilapidated school facility. The village of Son Dinh covers 850 hectares of land; the majority of its population, 12,518 people, are farm workers with substandard living condition.

In May 1996, VNHELP received a progress report and letter of appreciation from the village parent association. Mr. Nguyen Van Ut, president of the parent association wrote:

"With the 500 Dollars (approximateley 5,550,000 Dong Viet Nam) received from VNHELP, we have repaired the school yard with 130 squares meters of tiles and rebuild the kindergarten classroom to replace the run-down wooden structure. All the teachers and students are very encouraged by and pleased with new school yard."

This year, VNHELP also begun supporting the Le Quy Don Junior High School in Quang Nam Province with the budget of $500. Total budget for the Assistance to Rural Schools Project will be $1,800. Funding for the 1997 will be used to restore the dilapidated facilities at four schools and to purchase teaching materials.
