Of paths the Eight-fold is the best,
of truths the statement Four,
the passionless of teachings best,
of humankind the Seer.
273. Tám chánh, ðß(c)ng thù th¡ng,
B¯n câu, lý thù th¡ng,
Ly tham, pháp thù th¡ng,
Giæa các loài hai chân,
Pháp nhãn, ngß(c)i thù th¡ng.
274. This is the Path, no other's there
for purity of insight,
enter then upon this path
bemusing Mara utterly.
274. Ðß(c)ng này, không ðß(c)ng khác
Ðßa ðªn kiªn thanh t¸nh.
Nªu ngß½i theo ðß(c)ng này,
Ma quân s¨ mê loÕn.
275. Entered then upon this Path
you'll make an end of dukkha.
Freed in knowledge from suffering's stings
the Path's proclaimed by me.
275. Nªu ngß½i theo ðß(c)ng này,
Ðau kh± ðß(r)c ðoÕn t§n.
Ta dÕy ngß½i con ðß(c)ng.
V¾i trí, gai chß¾ng di®t.
276. Buddhas just proclaim the Path
but you're the ones to strive.
Contemplatives who tread the Path
are freed from Mara's bonds
276. Ngß½i hãy nhi®t tình làm,
Nhß Lai chï thuyªt dÕy.
Ngß(c)i hành trì thi«n ð¸nh
Thoát trói buµc ác Ma.
276. When with wisdom one discerns
transience of conditioned things
one wearily from dukkha turns
treading the Path to purity.
277. T¤t cä hành vô thß(c)ng
V¾i Tu®, quán th¤y v§y
Ðau kh± ðß(r)c nhàm chán:
Chính con ðß(c)ng thanh t¸nh.
277. When with wisdom one discerns
the dukkha of conditioned things
one wearily from dukkha turns
treading the Path to purity.
278. T¤t cä hành kh± ðau
V¾i Tu®, quán th¤y v§y,
Ðau kh± ðß(r)c nhàm chán:
Chính con ðß(c)ng thanh t¸nh.
278. When with wisdom one discerns
all knowables are not a self
one wearily from dukkha turns
treading the Path to purity.
279. T¤t cä pháp vô ngã,
V¾i Tu®, quán th¤y v§y,
Ðau kh± ðß(r)c nhàm chán:
Chính con ðß(c)ng thanh t¸nh.
279. Though time to strive, not striving,
while young and strong yet indeed,
weak-minded and irresolute:
one finds not wisdom's way.
280. Khi c¥n, không n² lñc,
Tuy trë mÕnh, nhßng lß(c)i
Chí nhu nhß(r)c, biªng nhác.
V¾i trí tu® thø ðµng,
Sao tìm ðß(r)c chánh ðÕo?
280. In speech ever watchful with mind well-restrained
never with body do unwholesomeness.
So should one purify these three kamma-paths
winning to the Way made known by the Seers.
281. L(c)i nói ðß(r)c th§n tr÷ng,
Tâm tß khéo hµ phòng,
Thân ch¾ làm ði«u ác,
Hãy giæ ba nghi®p t¸nh,
ChÑng ðÕo thánh nhân dÕy.
281. From endeavour wisdom springs,
lacking effort wisdom wanes:
having known this two-fold path
either to progress or decline
so should one exhort oneself
that wisdom may increase.
282. Tu Thi«n, trí tu® sanh,
Bö Thi«n, trí tu® di®t.
Biªt con ðß(c)ng hai ngä
Ðßa ðªn hæu, phi hæu,
Hãy tñ mình n² lñc,
Khiªn trí tu® tång trß·ng.
282. The wood cut down but not a tree
since it's from wood that fear is born.
Having cut wood and woodedness
O bhikkhus be without a wood.
283. Яn r×ng không ð¯n cây
T× r×ng, sinh s(r) hãi;
Яn r×ng [1] và ái døc,
TÖ kheo, hãy t¸ch m¸ch.
283. As long indeed as woodedness
of man to women is not cut
so long in bondage is one's mind
as milch-calf to the mother cow.
284. Khi nào chßa c¡t ti®t,
Ái døc giæa gái trai,
Tâm ý vçn buµc ràng,
Nhß bò con vú m©.
284. Cut off affection for oneself
as a hand a lily in the Fall.
Cultivate this peaceful Path,
Nibbana by the Buddha taught.
285. Tñ c¡t dây ái døc,
Nhß tay bë sen thu,
Hãy tu ðÕo t¸ch t¸nh,
Niªt bàn, Thi®n Th® dÕy.
285. Here shall I spend the Rains,
here the Winter, here the Summer.
Thus speculates the fool,
the danger he knows not.
286. Mùa mßa ta · ðây
Ðông, hÕ cûng · ðây,
Ngß(c)i ngu tâm tß·ng v§y,
Không tñ giác hi¬m nguy.
286. For one who has a clinging mind
and finds delight in babes and herds
Death does seize and carry away
as great flood a sleeping village.
287. Ngß(c)i tâm ý ð¡m say
Con cái và súc v§t,
TØ th¥n b¡t ngß(c)i ¤y,
Nhß løt trôi hàng ngü.
287. No sons are there for shelter
nor father nor related folk,
one by the Death-king seized upon
in kin no shelter finds.
288. Mµt khi tØ th¥n ðªn,
Không có con che ch·,
Không cha, không bà con,
Không thân thích che ch·.
288. Having understood this fact
the wise by virtue well-restrained
swiftly then should clear the Path
leading to Nibbana.
289. Biªt rõ ý nghîa này,
B§c trí lo trì gi¾i,
Mau l© làm thanh t¸nh,
Con ðß(c)ng ðªn Niªt bàn.
