I read your letter, thanks, Tu. Here are some answers.

  • (1) Having read some of Dr. Goldratt's books, I guess I believe my company goal ought to be to make more money now as well as in the future, but have yet to undo my Cost World and Local Optimum thinking and bad habits. Maybe THAT is the core problem. We have a Mission (not really a goal) Statement that we would like carried out, but I just sort of welded this together from here and there. "Our mission is to help raise the living standards of our fellow Filipinos, by constantly striving to surpass the expectations of our customers in the goods and services we offer. In achieving this we bring back the glory to our creator from whom these blessings flow." It sounds like a foundation and not a business. No mention of money. No wonder it's difficult.
  • (2) I will have to work on the UDE's further tomorrow. I have yet to discover the core problem, which I suspect is exactly that, LACK of focus on the core, high-impact problems.
  • (3) Actually, we are experiencing the biggest crisis of our 10 year existence. But I cannot panic, because now more than ever I need to think quickly and correctly. This is an excellent opportunity to test Evaporating Clouds and TOC. My company is going through an illegal strike which I am hoping will end soon. This is the most urgent and serious UDE within the company. There is a STALEMATE conflict between union officers who perceive we are out to bust their union and who think we have not been treating them justly - thus they went on this strike (which by the way they realized, if declared illegal, means that ALL their leaders may automatically be fired) and management who will simply NOT tolerate such irresponsible AND illegal acts that has caused us severe damage. At any rate, this simply means I need to catch up, shorten lead times and make more money, more quickly than ever, so we may catch up with 1 month worth of lost revenues and delayed orders.
  • (4) I will order Dettmer's book from ASQC tomorrow morning.
