Can Tho School for Handicapped Children

Connected with the pig farm, a "Bio-gas" project utilizes animal wastes to produce heating energy for the kitchen and saves the school 400,000 Dong (40 USD) every month. In addition to these projects, the school has provided vocational training for students, which includes sewing and woodworking. A selected number of woodworking products were displayed at our Fourth Anniversary Celebration.
The Can Tho School for Handicapped Children was formed in 1988 to provide education and vocational assistance to blind, mute and deaf students. Since its inception, the students population has grown from 13 to 146. This is the only one in the Mekong Delta and is the third largest school for handicapped children in whole country.

Since 1992, VNHELP has continuously provided educational supplies and monetary assistance to the school. With VNHELP's support, the school has developed several self-supporting projects. The school has successfully trained a number of students in traditional medicine; these students are currently working at the Can Tho Hospital. In 1993 VNHELP also assisted the school in establishing a pig farm to generate additional funds. The pig farm has proven to be both successful and income generating. The school has made a profit of approximately 6,000,000 Dong (600 USD) from the sale of the first two lots of pigs.
