Any file ending with ".txt" should be downloadable or readable by PC, Mac, Unix, etc., without any decoding. Depending upon your hardware and software, you may find extra funny characters, but the text should still be legible. Every line ends with a "hard" carriage return, and the line lengths are fixed unless you have software which is able to remove those "hard" carriage returns.
Any file ending with ".hqx" is designed for a Mac and will need to be decoded by BinHex (found in the StuffIt program and other places) before using.
Any file ending with ".exe", ".com", ".doc", ".zip", or other DOS extensions are designed for a PC. Decoding will generally be required.
As files get uploaded to the folders in this directory, a "foreword" or "readme" file will generally be added to explain the contents of that folder.
