FAQ for the giao diem i cdrom (Feb 27, 1995)

this compilation of faq falls into three categories:

General Questions

1. what format is the CDROM? can it be use on Macs? PC? UNIX? etc?

the cdrom is in ISO-9660 with rock ridge extension and thus can be used on Macs, PC, unix and any other machines that understands how to read ISO-9660. almost all modern machines know how to do this, so there should be no problem.

problem reading the cdrom often is traced to not having the latest version of os driver for the cdrom drive. please contact your vendor for its latest software.

2. how to read the scv format text files? what is scv format?

scv format, formally known as viqr (VIetnamese quotable R), is a way of entering vietnamese characters using only the ascii characters.

these viqr format files are plain text file. you can read and edit them using any regular text editor or word processor. they look funny because they are trying to represent some vietnamese characters that are not present in the ascii character set.

to view them in true Vietnamese, you can either convert them into a vietnamese format compatible with your vietnamese software and view it. or the easiest way is to view the file with vnview utility. vnview will display the text in true vietnamese characters on screen. these utilities can be found in vps/dos directory.

to convert viqr to viscii or vps for display on your screen or for printing, you can use on of the following utilities (depending on what kind of computer you are using):

for DOS/Windows, use either:

\vps\dos\convert.exe (Author: VPS)
\viscexe\dos\cn303\cn.exe (Author: linh Hoang)

4. help with these software?

please contact the authors directly. for example, michael do at [email protected], truc hoang at [email protected].

3. what are the various graphic files format on the CDROM? how to view them?

there are several graphics file formats on gd I. JPEG, GIF, and tif needs the included lviewp18.zip to view them. avi needs the included microsoft video for windows to view them.

5. i have a mac and i was able to copy all the mac font files from the cd-rom to my Mac. However, those files require the binhex and stufit programs to convert and extract them, and i couldn't find them anywhere in the CD.

You're right, stuffit or compactpro will do the job (convert from binhex) but we didn't include those on the CD. stuffit is similar to pkzip in the pc world. you simply can not own a mac without Stuffit. you can get stuffit from any of the mac archives. try ftp.cdrom.com:/pub/mac. i just put a copy of stuffit lite on ftp.saigon.com:/pub/utils/mac/Stuffit3.0.7installer this is a shareware version of Stuffit. make sure you have binary mode on when you ftp it. put it on your desktop and double click on it to run. it is a self-install version.

6. i got a copy of the cdrom and i don't know how to run it. i have a quadra 650 system 7.1 Macintosh. Now, should i have gotten a mac version of the giao diem cdrom or did i do something wrong?

there is only one cdrom version. there are a few things on the cdrom you can run on the MAC: * videos files - avi (Video for Windows) Format. you need a viewer program that view avi format files. * midi and wav files - you need a viewer/player program to run that. * pictures files such as TIF, GIF, jpg - you need graphic viewer to view that. some mac drawing or painting programs may support the above formats. * text files such as .scv, .txt, read.me, etc. - you need a word processor to view it. * mac font files - you need some utilities to unstuff it and use it. see 5). most of the required viewer programs are available at the many public ftp sites, such as the: [email protected] site.

7. how do i view the Soc.Culture.Vietnamese archived files?

the scv files are gzipped using gnu zip. to unzip or uncompresss them, use /utility/dos/gunzip.exe. (GNU zip). the program to gunzip it is in the cdrom at utility/dos directory (it is call gzip.exe). to gunzip a file: Example: to gunzip 930101.gz, first copy the gzip.exe file into your hard drive at c: root or into the dos directory. for example, g: is the cdrom drive and c: is the drive where the dos directory is at, type: copy g:\utility\dos\gzip.exe c:\ or type: copy g:\utility\dos\gzip.exe c:\ dos, then c:\> gzip -d g:\usenet\scv\volume93\aug\930815.02 or to pipe it to stdout (the screen) c:\> gunzip -dc g:\usenet\scv\volume93\aug\930815.02 | more note that the 930815.02 means the scv second (#2) posting of 8/15/93. if you need a mac or unix version of gunzip, let anh tin Le, [email protected], know.

8. the cadao screen saver is great, but can it search string using winvnkey (TriChlor software group)?. or i have to use vps . i tried VPS, but it does not work. it only search for word without the "da^'u"

let me see if i understand the question :-). you want to use files in viscii or vps format for the cadao screen saver. Correct? the trichlor version of cadao can only handle plain ascii text. Mr. cb modified the copyrighted program Yow, but he only changed the resources (program name and menu labels, etc.) as far as i can see. you can find the source code to yow (on CICA) and modify it yourself to work with viscii or vps code. it is fairly easy to do.

10. what do i need to view files with extension (*.webp & *.scv)?

any file with extension "scv" is a text file. you can view it by using any text editor or word processor. for example, anlan.scv is a text file in 7bit scv format. for jpg files, you need a jpg viewer. one shareware windows jpg viever is included on the CDROM. it is called LVIEWP18.ZIP. you need to unzip it by using PKUNZIP.EXE, the unzip program is in \utility\dos\pkunzip.exe. so first copy the \utility\windrv\lviewp18.zip into a temporary directory in your hard drive and then unzip it. then follow the instruction in the accompanied text file. note that it is a windows program and must run under windows.

11. please let me know how i can obtain file MVFTSUI2.DLL. i have access to a hi-speed modem.

you can get the file from the saigon ftp site. ftp to [email protected] and look around. or i can email the file to you uuencoded. then you can uudecode it and copy to a floppy disk and take it home. email to me, [email protected] with a request.

General Question 13. i tried all subdirectory under VISCEXE\WINDOWS and had the following problems:

  1. GIOBUI10 & THITAP: cannot read. some letter is replaced by symbols, i guess that it had to do with the display fonts in window, any suggestion on how i can get around this problem.
  2. HOITHO88. HXHWIN10, TRIMEDIA, tconson -- general protection fault on execution, sometimes severe enough that system requires reboot.
