133. speak not harshly to other folk,
speaking so, they may retort.
Dukkha indeed is quarrelsome speech
and force for force may hurt you.

Nói ác, b¸ nói lÕi,
Kh± thay l¶i ph¦n nµ,
Ðao trßþng phän chÕm ngß¶i.
134. if like a broken gong
never you reverberate,
quarreling's not part of you,
that Nibbana's reached.

Nhß chiªc chuông b¸ b¬.
Ngß¶i ðã chÑng Niªt Bàn
Ngß¶i không còn ph¦n nµ.
135. as with force the cowherds drive
their cattle out to graze,
like this decay and death drive out
the life from all beings.
135. V¾i g§y ngß¶i chån bò,
Lùa bò ra bãi cö;
Cûng v§y, già và chªt,
Lùa ngß¶i ðªn mÕng chung.
136. when the fool does evil deeds
their end he does not know,
such kamma burns the one unwise
as one who's scorched by fire.
136. Ngß¶i ngu làm ði«u ác,
Không ý thÑc vi®c làm.
Do tñ nghi®p, ngß¶i ngu
B¸ nung n¤u, nhß lØa.
137. whoever forces the forceless
or offends the inoffensive,
speedily comes indeed
to one of these ten states:

Làm ác ngß¶i không ác.
Trong mß¶i loÕi kh± ðau,
Ch¸u g¤p mµt loÕi kh±:
138. sharp pain or deprivation,
or injury to the body,
or to a serious disease,
derangement of the mind;
138. Ho£c kh± th÷ kh¯c li®t,
Thân th¬ b¸ thß½ng vong,
Ho£c th÷ b®nh k¸ch li®t,
Hay loÕn ý tán tâm.
139. troubled by the government,
or else false accusation,
or by loss of relatives,
destruction of one's wealth;
139. Ho£c tai vÕ t× vua,
Hay b¸ vu tr÷ng tµi;
Bà con phäi ly tán,
Tài sän b¸ nát tan.
140. or one's houses burn
on raging conflagration,
at the body's end, in hell
arises that unwise one.
140. Ho£c phòng ¯c nhà cØa
B¸ höa tai thiêu ð¯t;
Khi thân hoÕi mÕng chung,
Ác tu® sanh ð¸a ngøc.
141. not going naked, nor matted hair, nor filth,
nor fasting, not sleeping on bare earth,
no penance on heels, nor sweat nor grime
can purify a mortal still overcome by doubt.

B®n tóc, tro trét mình,
Tuy®t thñc, lån trên ð¤t,
S¯ng nh¾p, siêng ng°i x±m,
Làm con ngß¶i ðßþc sÕch,
Nªu không tr× nghi ho£c.
142. even though adorned, if living in peace
calm, tamed, established in the holy life,
for beings all laying force aside:
one pure, one peaceful, a bhikkhu is he.
142. ai s¯ng tñ trang sÑc,
Nhßng an t¸nh, nhiªp phøc,
S¯ng kiên trì, phÕm hÕnh,
Không hÕi m÷i sinh linh.
V¸ ¤y là phÕm chí,
Hay sa môn, kh¤t sî.
143. where in the world is found
one restrained by shame,
awakened out of sleep
as splendid horse with whip?
143. Th§t khó tìm · ð¶i,
Ngß¶i biªt th©n, tñ chª,
Biªt tránh né chï trích
Nhß ngña hi«n tránh roi.
144. as splendid horse touched with whip,
be ardent, deeply moved,
by faith and virtue, effort too,
by meditation, Dhamma's search,
by knowledge, kindness, mindfulness;
abandon dukkha limitless!
144. Nhß ngña hi«n chÕm roi,
Hãy nhi®t tâm, hång hái,
V¾i tín, gi¾i, tinh t¤n,
Thi«n ð¸nh cùng trÕch pháp.
Minh hÕnh ðü, chánh ni®m,
ÐoÕn kh± này vô lßþng.

fletchers fashion shafts,
as joiners shape their timber
those of good conduct tame themselves.
