256. whoever judges hastily
does dhamma not uphold,
a wise one should investigate
truth and untruth both.
256. Ngß½i ðâu phäi pháp trø,
XØ sñ quá chuyên chª,

Cä hai chánh và tà!
257. who others guides impartially
with carefulness, with Dhamma,
that wise one dhamma guards,
a "Dhamma-holder's" called.
257. Không chuyên chª, ðúng pháp,
Công b¢ng, d¡t dçn ngß(c)i,
B§c trí s¯ng ðúng pháp,
Th§t xÑng danh pháp trø.
258. just because articulate
one's not thereby wise,
hateless, fearless and secure,
a "wise one" thus is called.
258. Không phäi vì nói nhi«u,
M¾i xÑng danh b§c trí.
An ±n, không oán s(r).
Th§t ðáng g÷i b§c trí.
259. just because articulate
one's not skilled in Dhamma;
but one who's heard even little
and dhamma in the body sees,
that one is skilled indeed,
not heedless of the Dhamma.
259. Không phäi vì nói nhi«u,
M¾i xÑng danh trì pháp,
Nhæng ai tuy nghe ít,
Nhßng thân hành ðúng pháp,
Không phóng túng chánh pháp,
M¾i xÑng danh trì pháp.
260. a man is not an Elder
though his head be grey,
he's just fully ripe in years,
"aged-in-vain" he's called.
260. Không phäi là trß·ng lão,
Nªu cho có bÕc ð¥u.
Ngß(c)i chï tu±i tác cao,
Ðß(r)c g÷i là: Lão ngu.
261. in whom is truth and dhamma too,
harmlessness, restraint, control,
he's steadfast, rid of blemishes,
an "Elder" he is called.
261. ai chân th§t, ðúng pháp,
Không hÕi, biªt chª phøc,
B§c trí không c¤u uª,
M¾i xÑng danh Trß·ng Lão.
262. not by eloquence alone
or by lovely countenance
is a person beautiful
if jealous, boastful, mean.
262. Không phäi nói lßu loát,
Không phäi s¡c m£t ð©p,
Thành ðß(r)c ngß(c)i lß½ng thi®n,
Nªu ganh, tham, d¯i trá.
263. but "beautiful" is called that one
in whom these are completely shed,
uprooted, utterly destroyed,
a wise one purged of hate.
263. ai c¡t ðß(r)c, phá ðß(r)c
T§n g¯c nh± tâm ¤y
Ngß(c)i trí ¤y di®t sân,
Ðß(r)c g÷i ngß(c)i hi«n thi®n.
264. by shave head no samana
if with deceit, no discipline.
Engrossed in greed and selfishness
how shall he be a samana?
264. Ð¥u tr÷c, không sa môn
Nªu phóng túng, nói láo.
Ai còn ð¥y døc tham,
Sao ðß(r)c g÷i sa môn ?
265. all evils altogether he
subdues both fine and gross.
Having subdued al evil he
indeed is called a "Samana".
265. ai l¡ng d¸u hoàn toàn,
Các ði«u ác l¾n nhö,
Vì l¡ng d¸u ác pháp,
Ðß(r)c g÷i là sa môn.
266. though one begs from others
by this alone's no bhikkhu.
Not just by this a bhikkhu
but from all dhamma doing.
266. Chï kh¤t thñc nh(c) ngß(c)i,
Ðâu phäi là tÖ kheo!
Phäi theo pháp toàn di®n,
Kh¤t sî không, không ðü.
267. who both good and evil deeds
has gone beyond with holy life,
having discerned the world he fares
and "Bhikkhu" he is called.
267. ai vß(r)t qua thi®n ác,
Chuyên s¯ng ð(c)i PhÕm HÕnh,
S¯ng th¦m sát · ð(c)i,
M¾i xÑng danh tÖ kheo.
268. by silence one is not a sage
if confused and foolish,
but one who's wise, as if with scales
weighs, adopts what's good.
268. im l£ng nhßng ngu si,
Ðâu ðß(r)c g÷i ¦n sî?
Nhß ngß(c)i c¥m cán cân,
B§c trí ch÷n ði«u lành.
269. shunning evil utterly
one is a sage, by that a sage.
Whoever both worlds knows
for that one's called a "Sage".
269. T× bö các ác pháp,
M¾i th§t là ¦n sî.
Ai th§t hi¬u hai ð(c)i
M¾i ðß(r)c g÷i ¦n sî.
270. by harming living beings
one is not a "Noble" man,
by lack of harm to all that live
one is called a "Nobel One".
270. Còn sát hÕi sinh linh,
Ðâu ðß(r)c g÷i Hi«n thánh.
Không hÕi m÷i hæu tình,
M¾i ðß(r)c g÷i Hi«n thánh.
271. not by vows and rituals
or again by learning much
or by meditative calm
or by life in solitude.
271. ChÆng phäi chï gi¾i c¤m
Cûng không phäi h÷c nhi«u,
ChÆng phäi chÑng thi«n ð¸nh,
S¯ng thanh v¡ng mµt mình.
272. should you, o bhikkhu, be content,
"I've touched the bliss of letting go
not enjoyed by common folk",
though you've not gained pollution's end.
272. ta hß·ng an ±n lÕc,
Phàm phu chßa hß·ng ðß(r)c.
